Green Knight-Sir Bercilak  Most famous for his role in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The story goes that the Green Knight challenges Gawain to a contest of blows. Each is allowed one strike at the other. Gawain first blow decapitates the Green Knight, who simply picks up his head and reattaches it to his body, saying he will return in a year to take his turn. He returns and tries three times to cut off Gawain 's head. The first two missing the mark and the last just slightly cuts his neck.
