| Models of Simon de Montfort
6th earl of Leicester. |
|
Toy knights of Simon de Montfort are few, most produced
are that of his father Simon de Montfort 1V produced by French
manufacturers. Below is my collection of toy figures, most of which I
have commissioned from prominent Heraldic model makers and few figures I have
enjoy making myself.
They are all to a scale of 50mm to 60mm.

This model of Simon de Montfort is my latest effort
at painting and
shows him as a young knight. The design of the lion is based roughly on
the Matthew Paris drawing of 1244.
My painting skills still need to improve, but I
like him . |
|
Frederick Ping made
several models of Simon. His figures were mostly scratch built, so its
very difficult to know how many he produced. He also made figures of his
wife Eleanor and men at arms with his colours.
This example I feel is a younger Simon.

A great model
made for me by the wonderful model maker/
heraldic painter Peter Greenhill, the casting is a
Courtenay H9. |
|
Simon de Montfort with the lion I painted in
the style of the Simon de Montfort Society emblem. |

These two models
were produced by
Mulburry
Miniatures
Again not sure how many were produced
before the company ceased trading.

| This model was built by Jim
Lloyd a few years back and has lost none of its of charm. I thought it
would look good with a castle background. |

I'm very
excited by this figure kindly sent to me by
Replicants.
Its very finely detailed, the raised lion on the shield should look
great white on the red. This will be the first plastic figure I
have painted, wish me luck.

| Models of Simon de Montfort
the
crusader. |
|
His father, also called Simon
made his name in the crusades against the Cathars.
He was crushed and
killed by a rock from the walls of besieged Toulouse in 1218.
I collect a few models of his father
but he does not hold any great collecting passion. It is not
surprising that given the havoc he brought on the Cathars that two toy knight Manufacturers
who produce models of
Simon de Montfort the crusader are based in France.
