Did Edward and Gilbert de Clare knight several men
in Mosham Meadow forming the twelve man hit squad that went after Simon
de Montfort with orders to kill him. Or did Edward want his Uncle spared, as
he did , in the case of Simons son Guy, sorry I don't think so.
One report say Simon was killed by Roger Mortimer's
lance, another by a common soldier who pulled him from his dying horse
and hacked him to death.
What was recorded is that his head, hands , feet
and testicles were cut off. His head was sent to Lady Mortimer as a
token of revenge. Therefore it must be assumed Mortimer or one of his men
did kill him.
We do know Mortimer was responsible for the death
of Hugh Despenser which almost had the most calamitous repercussions
fifty years later for one of the Mortimer family.
Sadly is Meadow is private land. The Society does
get to walk on it sometimes by arrangement, please see out calendar
Mosham Meadow is on left of the A 44 Worcester road
about a mile and a bit past the Tesco store.
The Birmingham Anglers Club has a small car park a
few fields away.
