The
rescue of Guinevere
(from the MGM production brochure)
This
was M.G.M.'s first CinemaScope production shot on location in England and
Ireland.
Shooting
took six months with over two years pre-production research. Camelot had to be
built to withstand the British weather and took nearly a year to complete. 500
large horse were needed for the gallant knights, also 500 shields and 600 lances
made from balsam wood. Directed by Richard Thorpe of the earlier Ivanhoe fame,
staring Mel Ferrer as King Arthur, Ava Gardner as his Queen Guinevere, Robert
Taylor as the Queens lover Lancelot and Stanley Baker as the traitor Mordred,
makes this film fun to watch, although a now little dated, if compared
with the special effects of Excalibur from the eighties. But 30 years is a long
time in the film production world. Its wonderful now to even get
these older films on DVD.
