Knights of Avalon

What the figures may have been, a little fun with Timpo knights.

"Knights of the Round Table" heraldic design differences in film and toys and my conversions

King Arthur, Simon and Lambert my mounted converted models

If you have seen the movie you will notice Timpo did a great job with the the toys. Norman Tooth's knight figures with their moving helmets and well detailed armour are to me the best toy knights that were produced in the early fifties, by the large volume manufacturers.  But if you have seen the film you will have noticed a few differences in heraldic detail in King Arthur and Sir Lancelot.

Its interesting that Mordred is the closest, his unicorn design in the movie is reproduced well on the shield of the Timpo model.

In the toy knights both Arthur and Lancelot both share the same Lion design shield, painted red for Arthur and yellow for Lancelot. Interestingly with Lancelot's lion motif the movie designs vary, the lion image on his horse does not match the lion design on his tunic. But the tunic design in the movie is very close to the design on the Timpo shield.

Poor Arthur for some reason got a hand me down shield design, yet in the movies he has a wonderful red Dragon on his shied and horse. The Dragon is reproduced in all its splendor on the standing toy Arthur figure, sad that cost or time did not allow for a dragon shield on the mounted model.

I should also be noted that in the movie both the lion and dragon face forward towards the horses head on the right side, but  they face to the rear on the left side.

The two knights seen here are painted in the colours of the original Timpo's , but as can be seen Arthur has a dragon motif and  Lancelot a Lion these are similar to the heraldic motifs they both had in the movie

A few variations of the mounted King Arthur achieved with a razor saw, my favourite is the model with sword held half up the blade.
