Knights of Avalon

Courtenay Knights

Courtenay Knights are mostly to a scale of of 50mm. Richard Courtenay first designed model knights for Ernest Doran  . Leaving that company in the late 1920's he went on to produce knights in his own name until his death in 1963 . , Their design and meticulous painting is only matched by a few modern painters. It is not surprising that these Heraldic Models are now most sort after and when found are expensive. Depending on their rarity standing figures may start at £200 + and mounted £ 300 + ,I recently heard of a  very rare model exceeding £5000.

The few photographs here cannot do justice to this great model knight designer and Heraldic artist.

A detailed history has been compiled by Peter Greenhill in his excellent book "Heraldic Miniature Knights"

After Richard Courtenay death the moulds were passed to Frederick Ping who produced soft lead versions which were painted in matt paint. Figures were produced by Ping till his death in 1977. In 1978 the moulds were sold to Peter Greenhill, who continues to produce figures with superb heraldic detail in gloss enamel.
