Knights of Avalon

Arthurian Heraldry

I have always been fascinated with Arthurian Heraldry and so I have started a collection of model knights painted in the Arthurian Coat of Arms. I have adapted them to my toy knight, a flat casting approx 60mm high.

This is not the real Arthur and Knights of the Round Table Knights, but names from Arthurian literature.

I have divided them in two sections. The first is from the windows of the wonderful hall in Tintagel, this section is complete.

The second is Arthurian Heraldry I have discovered in rolls, paintings, books, toys etc. These is my interpretation of the arms and as such I don't profess them to be accurate, just my bit of fun.. I will keep adding to these, I have a long way to go as they number over 200 knights. Hope you enjoy them.

Arthurian Heraldry at King Arthur Great Halls Tintagel

In the Hall of Chivalry there are 48 stained glass windows depicting the shields of some of some of the Arthurian Knights these were designed by and crafted by Veronica Whall in 1930-33. They are lovely and well worth a visit.

King Arthur

I have created about 33 others at

The Round Table Knights Arms as depicted in the stained windows

The Heraldry is very interesting as I must have been created for the Hall of Chivalry as it does not in most cases follow the usual Heraldic Arms from the Arthurian Rolls.

I often wondered if the designers from the MGM Film Knights of the Round Table (1952/3) did some research at the Great Halls as there are some similarities with the films coats of arms and in turn the Timpo models.

Arthurian Heraldry from the Rolls and Painting and Book Illustrations

These are the Coats of Arms from romantic storification of French prose authors and best know of all Malory.

These shields do not belong to the real Arthur, but are the Coats of Arms displayed at many of the Tourneys which were held in the Arthurian tradition from about 1200.

Much research in this area has carried out by Edouard Sandoz, Gerard J Brault and Michel Pastoureau.

In his book Armorial des chevaliers de la Table Rounde . Michel Pastoureau lists with detail 178 named knights. This information gathered from Rolls he found through France.

My painted model knights are how I would like to have seen them, I'm no expert on heraldry and no wish to be, but slowly I will add to these figures.     Knights of the Round Table Heraldry   I will keep adding to these figures.
