arthurian toy knights

I started my toy knight collection and my love of the legend from a holiday present and visit.

King Arthur's Hall in Tintagel to a boy of 11 way back in the fifties was the most wonderful place you could imagine. Home of the Ancient Order of the Fellowship of the Knights of the Round Table of King Arthur an organization founded in 1927 it was full of Arthurian stuff.

Leaving the building clutching my model knight and postcards of Arthurian shields little realizing that the visit would seed a life long passion for toy knights and a thirst for the real and fictional Arthur.

Probably we shall never be totally sure if King Arthur ever existed, personally I believe a person or persons did exist. The oral stories of his exploits provided writers throughout the centuries with the basics to creative the romantic legends we still read today. This King Arthur of literature has been transformed in to many toy knights from the worlds lead and plastic manufacturers to keep any collector happy.

Little Lead Soldiers Round table set has a total of 18 figures. Including Queen Guenevere and the Lady of the Lake, nice to see the ladies present for once. Again round table, the knights are mostly seated. It is supplied painted. I have only see a very poor photograph so I can't comment on quality of either the casting or painting. ( if I can get pictures I'll give them a page)

The Knights of Round Table in model form is a wonderful scene. I believe a model was made by Fredrick Ping, if so it would be marvellous to know if it exists.

The best of the modern examples is produced by Les Etains Du Graal .12 figures standing around the round table with right arms and swords pointing to the center. The modeling of the figures is excellent, the skill of the painting is in your hands. My only reservation is the 100mm scale, how I wish it was a usual 54mm. But as a painted set for an Arthurian fan its unbeatable.

Britains Arthurian knights, personally I think they missed a great opportunity to give us some great figures. Sorry Britains they are very disappointing, they are stiff, why no action figures.
